BS EN ISO 1461:2009 is also known as BS 1461 for short which is a standard provided by the British Standard Institute (BSI)  that provide specifications on the general properties of coatings  and test methods for coatings applied by dipping fabricated iron and steel articles (including certain castings) in a zinc melt (containing not more than 2% of other metals). This is a key standard for the treatment of iron and steel and it is an indispensable specification for buyers of hot dip galvanized coatings and for galvanizers.

Coatings is a covering that is applied to the surface of an object, usually referred to as the substrate. In many cases coatings are applied to improve surface properties of the substrate, such as appearance, adhesion, wet ability, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and scratch resistance. in other particular cases of printing processes and semiconductor device fabrication the coating forms a very important part of the finished good. Coating and printing processes involve the application of a thin film of functional material to a substrate, such as paper, fabric, film, foil or sheet stock. The discussion of this article is frequently termed 'web based' or 'roll to roll' coating. When wound through the coating machine a roll of substrate is typically called a web. BS 1461 only applies to coatings applied in liquids.

Bs 1461 has been revised and upgraded into the new third edition that incorporates changes in content to reflect the experience gained in using the older version of BS EN ISO 1461. This standard’s scope of application has been refined to exclude woven or welded mesh products that are continuously galvanized where there has been a significant change to the text include:

1)      An explanation for weld seepage

2)      An explanation for Zinc melt

3)      References for the secondary zinc supply availability

4)      Explanation notes on coating finish

However it does not apply to the following:

1)      Sheet, wire and woven or welded mesh products that are continuously hot dip galvanized

2)      Pipe and tube that are hot dip galvanized in automatic plants.

3)      Over BS 1461 and post treatment

BS 1461

BS 1461 promotes a model to assure that its standard help organisations overcome coatings problem by applying coatings according to the specifications provided to ensure long term protection as well as all types of resistant against exposure of all weather and human activity. It also applies to door ifrastructure such as kids playgrounds with rides, street barriers and bridges that need a special coating for long term protection. A gateway access to BSI is provided by Standards Global to download and purchase standards.

BSI British Standard Institute is the publisher of BS1461.
